Hallbergmoos, August 2025 - The sun is shining, the waves are rolling - and that's more than just a summer feeling. Because at O₂ SURFTOWN MUC, solar energy not only generates light, but real waves, just like by the sea. Up to 90% of the surf park's entire electricity requirements are supplied directly from the neighboring combined-cycle solar power plant: from the wave system and catering facilities to the charging points for electric cars. A pioneering example of sustainable leisure activities.
"We minimize our footprint and the impact on our environment while creating experiences that inspire people. The sun provides energy for our waves."
Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, Founder & CEO, O₂ SURFTOWN MUC
Technology meets vision: a closed energy cycle
The adjacent VISPIRON combined solar power plant has an output of 10,500 kWp and generates around 11 GWh of energy annually, fed from almost 18,000 solar modules. The electricity flows directly and loss-free into the systems of Europe's largest surf park - without any detours.
An intelligent load management system enables the electricity to be used in real time. On sunny days, even more energy is produced than the surf park currently needs.
For additional flexibility, seven Huawei storage modules with a capacity of 2,000 kWh each are available - a latest-generation battery system that buffers excess energy and enables evening surfing with solar energy.
The combined solar power plant was funded as part of the regional program for the development of renewable infrastructure. VISPIRON and SURFTOWN are thus demonstrating how innovative partnerships between the public sector, business and the leisure industry can work in practice.
Sustainability as a system
The O₂ SURFTOWN MUC pursues a well thought-out sustainability concept that goes far beyond solar power. The aim is to combine energy, water and infrastructure in such a way that low-emission operation is possible in the long term - without compromising the experience.
100% green electricity: Up to 90% of the electricity required comes directly from the neighboring combined-cycle solar power plant. The remaining share is covered by certified green electricity from the grid.
Fossil-free heating & cooling: Geothermal energy supplies the park all year round via heat pumps - emission-free, quiet and energy-efficient.
Natural water cycle: Rainwater and groundwater circulate in a closed cycle with multi-stage filter technology. A state-of-the-art chlorine filter system enables up to three times less chlorine to be used than in a swimming pool. **Water that is extracted is fed back into the natural water cycle - not the sewage system.
Battery storage: Several battery storage units with a total capacity of 14 MWh ensure operation in the event of fluctuating generation, smooth out load peaks and enable surfing with solar energy - even when the sun has long since set. This ensures grid stability and security of supply.
Solar-supported charging infrastructure: 16 charging points on the site are supplied directly from the combined solar power plant. The price control reacts to the position of the sun - for conscious charging at the best time.
"Our shafts run on up to 90% solar energy. This not only changes our carbon footprint, but also shows how sustainable energy supply and leisure activities can be combined in a smart way."
Jonas Boehm-Tettelbach, Chief Operations Manager, O₂ SURFTOWN MUC
A place that inspires
The O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is not just a surf spot - it is a real laboratory for the future: for sustainable energy supply, social participation and economic resilience in the leisure sector. For the region, for companies, for everyone who wants to think about new ways of recreation and leisure. **A surf park that shows what is possible: in Hallbergmoos, in the middle of Germany.
