Six years of vision, seven months of operation, countless stories. What once began as a bold dream in a field in Hallbergmoos is now Germany's first surf park - a meeting place for surfers from all over the world and a symbol of innovation, community and pioneering spirit.
The path to the perfect wave
“Surfing in Germany - without the sea? That sounded like science fiction to many at first,” says Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, initiator and CEO of O₂ SURFTOWN MUC. “We didn't have any standards or feasibility studies. All we had was the conviction that surfing is not just a sport, but a unifying lifestyle that everyone should experience.”
With Hallbergmoos, the support of the authorities and tireless team spirit, this idea became a reality. Since opening in August 2024, O₂ SURFTOWN MUC has achieved what many thought was impossible: It brought the sea to Munich, Hallbergmoos - and surfers from all over the world with it.
The figures speak for themselves - but don't tell the whole story
- Over 1 million waves have been generated since the opening - from gentle beginner waves to challenging professional waves
- Reported in 2,470 press articles worldwide - from Europe to Australia, South America, USA and Asia
- Instagram reels with up to 44 million views made the wave pool a viral star
The attention is global, the message is clear: surfing has arrived in Germany. But for Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, it's not the numbers that count: “Our biggest wave isn't the one in the pool: it's the community we've created here. People from different backgrounds come together here - united by their passion for surfing.”
Surfing for everyone - our vision continues
But we are still a long way from reaching our goal. Based on this conviction, the “Share the Stoke” program has now been launched to further the vision of “surfing for all”. The aim is to overcome social barriers and make the power of surfing accessible to as many people as possible.
“Surfing knows no boundaries - neither physical nor social,” explains Max Pallauf, Surf Experience Manager at O₂ SURFTOWN MUC. “With 'Share the Stoke', we are creating a place where everyone is welcome. It's not just about surfing, but about promoting joie de vivre and community.”
Our partner clubs show what's possible:
- Visual Surf: Deaf people discover surfing via sign language - a new, tangible way to experience the sea.
-surf.bewusst.sein e.V.: Surfing as therapy for mental health and more self-confidence.
-High Five e.V.: Children and young people from difficult backgrounds discover new perspectives in the water.
-Open Ocean e.V.: People with and without disabilities experience freedom and balance on the water.
-Wellenbezwingen e.V.: Promotion and integration through surfing together.
The stories behind “Share the Stoke” are as diverse as the participants themselves. Our playlist with videos from the partner clubs provides insights into these special moments.
With a run-up to the next year
The first seven months have shown: O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is more than just Germany's first surf park - it is the result of a shared vision, hard work and real teamwork. “We have proven that a shared vision can move mountains,” says Chris Boehm-Tettelbach. Accordingly, we would like to thank all guests, partners, trades and participants who made this historic milestone possible with us. Now we're getting ready for next year, because the journey doesn't end here. “Surfing for all” - that is our mission.
2025 will be eventful, and we are just getting started.
