DAY 1 recap #SurfDM24

Hallbergmoos, October 11, 2024 - History was made today: after 28 years of the German Surfing Championships, the event took place in German waves for the first time - at the O2 SURFTOWN MUC. On the very first day of the competition, there was a special sense of optimism: surfers from all corners of Germany arrived to show off their skills in the various categories and to be part of a historic moment.

For Kai Schmitz, a 16-year-old junior surfer from the Cadets category, this day was not just a competition, but a long-cherished dream. “It's something very special to surf here in Germany at the German Championships,” says Kai, who qualified for the semi-finals with an impressive performance. “The fact that an event like this can take place in Germany - in a wave pool, in typical German weather - is simply surreal.” For Kai and many other young talents, it was an opportunity to prove themselves on a national stage without having to travel far.

The day also had a deeper meaning for longboarder Mascha Trietsch. She was beaming after her place in the semi-finals and emphasized how much she enjoyed the experience: “It's the first time I've surfed a longboard in a wave pool and the conditions are just perfect. What makes this event special is the equality: every wave offers the same opportunities for everyone - that makes for fair competition.” Mascha was particularly impressed by the increasing number of women in longboarding and is looking forward to the upcoming competition days.

This special day was also a milestone for the organizers. Michi Mohr, Chief Surfing Officer of O₂ SURFTOWN MUC, was visibly proud: “I'm delighted that the championships are now accessible to more people. Today was just the start of an exciting weekend of surfing action and we look forward to seeing who makes it to the finals.”

Michael Zirlewagen, President of the German Surfing Association, also looks forward to the event with enthusiasm: “This weekend marks a milestone in German surfing history. With a record number of registrations, the interest has never been greater in 28 years. I'm looking forward to the weekend and the many exciting encounters.”

The German Surf Championship not only brought the surfing community together, but also set an example that surfing in Germany is possible at the highest level. The entire competition will be streamed live on YouTube** so that fans who can't be there can still watch it up close. Over the next few days, viewers can expect even more top-class action as the best German surfers make their way to the final.

The action continues tomorrow!

The qualifying rounds and first finals start tomorrow morning at 8am. The big afterparty with DJs and a special guest performance by the famous surfer and musician Pat Burgener starts at 6pm.

Be there when we celebrate an unforgettable weekend with music, food, drinks and thrilling surf action. Admission is free - we recommend arriving early to avoid an entry queue. Alternatively, you can watch the entire championship from the comfort of your own home on YouTube, as well as on sportschau.de on Sunday.
