Hallbergmoos - It was in 1996 when the German Surfing Championships, organized by DWV, were first held on the French Atlantic coast in Cap de l'Homy. Back then, it was almost unimaginable that this competition would one day come to Germany. Now, 28 years later, German surfing is making history: For the first time, the championship will be held on German waves.
From October 11 to 13, 2024, O2 SURFTOWN MUC will host this significant event. The DWV's decision to hold the German Championships near Munich highlights the ongoing development of the surfing sport. In Germany's first and Europe's largest surf park, over 100 of the country's best surfers will compete for titles on home waves for the first time.
Michael Zirlewagen, President of the German Surfing Association (DWV): "Not only is the first-time presence of the German Championships on home soil a milestone, but also the opportunity to host three of our sports – Adaptive Surfing, Stand Up Paddling (SUP), and Surfing – inclusively in a surf park is a world premiere. We want to use the momentum after the renewed qualification for the Olympic Games and the new opportunities in Hallbergmoos near Munich in 2024 to further raise awareness of surfing in Germany."
With its globally unique wave technology, O2 SURFTOWN MUC offers the ideal conditions for this prestigious competition. The facility allows waves to be varied and precisely controlled at the push of a button, eliminating the usual one-week “waiting period” – the time competitors typically wait for optimal natural conditions. This ensures a perfectly planned competition with the best conditions guaranteed from October 11 to 13, 2024.
Michael Mohr, Chief Surfing Officer at O2 SURFTOWN MUC: "We are very pleased that the DWV has decided to host the 2024 German Championships with us. With the German Championships, we want to set not only a sign of inclusion but also one for the next generation. Having the elite of German surfing here in Hallbergmoos, including three Olympic participants, and experiencing a German Championship up close will surely inspire and motivate the kids."
Among the participants are top athletes like Tim Elter and Camilla Kemp (Paris 2024), as well as Leon Glatzer (Tokyo 2020), whose participation underscores the high quality of the competition. The event will not only be a sporting highlight – visitors can also enjoy a diverse program featuring music, culinary offerings, parties, and surf action.
